We asked Maaz Asif, an experienced Trial Attorney in the Austin office of Wiley Walsh, P.C., to impart his candid answers to a range of questions. After reading, you will be more informed on the well-respected reputation that Mr. Asif carries.
- What do you like most about being an employment lawyer?
I enjoy being able to help regular people with regular problems fight against employers that act against them in bad faith. In representing my clients, not only do I fight for them, but I also send a message to all employers nationwide that misconduct will not be tolerated. My hope is the fear of litigation will compel employers to treat their workers with the respect and dignity they deserve.
- What part of the job was most surprising?
Contrary to what every legal drama and the media would have you believe; the bulk of legal work is actually quite mundane. There’s a lot of procedural matters to deal with that can get quite boring unless you’re a legal nerd like me!
3. If you could argue any case in history, what would it be?
Citizens United v FEC. If only that case was decided the other way, we would be living in a fundamentally better country.
- What kind of clients do you like best?
Clients who are engaged throughout the entire process and are able to help us help them. A committed client is more often than not is a successful one.
5. What skills do you value as an employment attorney?
Beyond legal research and writing ability, the ability to tailor one’s message to the audience. Different judges, juries, arbitrators, mediators and other such decisionmakers find different lines of argumentation more or less persuasive. It is important to tell a story that is suited to those hearing it.
- Who is your favorite Supreme Court Justice?
Justice Thurgood Marshall. Under his court our country made wonderful strides in workers protection and civil rights.
7. What do you do when you’re not practicing law?
You can find me in the gym lifting weights, reading classic literature, and playing video games.
8. What’s your favorite legal TV show?
Better Call Saul. Out of all the legal dramas I have seen it is by far the most accurate. It tackles all sorts of ethical questions that come with the practice of law in an incredibly sophisticated manner.
- What is your favorite food?
Watermelon. A miracle food that hydrates, tastes delicious, is so nutritious and excellent for you while comprising hardly any calories. Truly a gift from the gods.
- What’s the best part of living in Austin?
It’s a unique blend of Southern and Southwest culture mixed with far too many subcultures to count. All of this makes for a truly unique atmosphere.
